My $100 Experiment: Using ChatGPT to Boost My Newsletter Subscribers
Explore the potential of ChatGPT for decision-making, SEO optimization, and more

Hey there! Have you ever heard of ChatGPT? It's an AI chatbot that can do a lot of things, including helping me grow my gaming newsletter. I recently gave ChatGPT $100 to see what would happen if I followed its advice to grow my substack as quickly as possible. So far, the results have been interesting. While ChatGPT is still figuring out some things, I'm excited to see how it can help me write promoted ads, set up a virtual mailing address and phone number, and even provide a second opinion for decision-making. If you're curious about how ChatGPT is changing the way we interact with technology and explore new possibilities, check out this article to learn more.

Ok so while reading the Garbage Day newsletter. Shoutout. I saw a twitter thread by someone who gave ChatGPT $100 and he would do anything the AI said in order to make as much money as possible as quickly as possible.

Just in-case anyone comes at me with the. “You aren’t the first person to come up with this idea.” I know. I don’t really care. I’ve been using ChatGPT for a while now and am fully aware that it is particularly good at being not good at a lot of things. Which is exceptional for an AI since previously the AI’s weren’t even bad at stuff. Right now the biggest compliment I can pay ChatGPT is that it’s really good at writing boilerplate text.
Aside from the “jailbreak” here and there that is basically what it is good at. I’ve seen a lot of videos of people using the ai to “Do X for them” but what you don’t see is the expertise they have in whatever topic they are working in, and the huge amount of finessing they have to do to get it to follow the rules. Again not nothing, its hugely impressive, but it still requires a decent amount of work.
The one area aside from boilerplate that I feel ChatGPT has a leg up in is SEO. Now unfortunately it doesn’t have access to the internet so it has no idea what’s trending, but since it’s a huge AI it absolutely can figure out what google’s search AI will like. So that’s what I set out to do. I figured $100 was a great small investment starting point for me to just ask it to do the things I’ve thought about doing, and write all the boring shit.
So far the only thing that it has done is help me write some promoted ads on twitter. It also help me set up an initial spending timeline. I’m writing this post before the first day of advertising, but I’m excited to see the results. Even if they are nothing this experiment has been fun.
The AI had an unintended benefit for me that I wasn’t expecting. I spent a lot of time fiddling with the AI to get it to answer my questions in ways that actually gave me specific instructions. I don’t think the advice was really anything better than I could have come up with myself, but it provided me with a second opinion of sorts. With the instructions from the AI I could reason with the material and just be a work horse. It kind of allowed me to separate my ego from the work, and to promote it as if it was my job.
I had to set up a virtual mailing address and a phone number for the stripe account. Something that I had never even thought about doing before, but something that seems so simple and obvious now that I’ve done it. I looked into getting a domain for the newsletter as well, which ended up out of budget for now but since I know how to do it if I actually start making returns from the newsletter its certainly a possibility for the future.
All in all this really is a work of passion and love, and the money that I get from anyone reading this article. (You) will go back into making the quality of the article higher. Another thing on my (List of stuff I want to add) is audio files of the articles for paid customers. The AI readers are really good, or if I’m making enough and there’s demand for it I could do it myself.
So what advice do I have for those of you out there looking to incorporate ChatGPT into your world. Remember that its not human. There are parts of our lives that are best left human, like these articles for example. Keeping those parts human (at least right now) is still keeping the heart of the machine alive. But there are tons of places where your work is interacting with AI, and ChatGPT is very good at that.
