Parking Garage Rally Circuit Review
A Love Letter to 90s Arcade Racers(& Ska Soundtracks)
I have a dark secret I want to share. I absolutely love early 90’s janky arcade games. One of my favorites is Sega Racing Classic 2.
It has all the things I love about early arcade games:
EXTREME attract-screen
Multiple RAD fonts
Confusing drifting mechanics
Its great!
Parking Garage Rally Circuit
Parking Garage Rally Circuit (PGRC) is that plus Mario Kart.
Fun fact: Parking Garage Rally Circuit is from the developer behind the legendary Jellycar, Walaber Entertainment LLC.
The game sports beautiful maps rendered in all their Nintendo 64 glory. The environments are varied and take you to locations ranging from beaches to snowy mountains, and rocky peaks.
Complimenting the main course is the finest recreation of 1990’s ska (music genre) the ever graced a saxophone. The Holophonics did a fantastic job with the soundtrack, and I have nothing but the utmost respect for them! Go ahead and play an article from their Bandcamp to set the mood.
Let’s talk about the most important aspect of PGRC: the cars.
The cars in PGRC are phenomenal-looking. Each car is customizable with 5 liveries, a custom number, and custom color paletts.
The game sports three different weight classes: from a hatchback, to a NASCAR-style racecar, to a heavyweight rallycar.
The cars control very well, and are a blast to drive. My only issue with the car physics is that it doesn’t take much for them to go haywire and screw up your entire race by flinging you into the air. Despite the game’s awesome feel most of the time, these instances are extremely frustrating.
However none of that takes away from what I consider a massive success from Walaber. The game nails everything I think the developer was trying to do and is absolutely worth playing, especially on Steam Deck!
Thank you for reading. I’ll see you all on the next track!
