What is Runescape: Dragonwilds
Runescape: Dragonwilds is a co-op experience developed Jagex the developers of Runescape. One would expect their next venture to be somwhat MMO adjacent, but instead they released a co-op survival crafting game.
I was initially confused because I thought that the co-op survival crafting genre was overstuffed like your camping bag after trying to get the tent back in it.
But here comes Runescape: Dragonwilds hoping to show that there are still original ideas left in the genre to explore.
Should You Play Runescape: Dragonwilds?
I really like the game. I actually like it quite a bit. The level of polish is really high especially compared to that of other games in this oversaturated genre.
The addition of Runescape-style grinding makes every skill unique to train, but the speed at which you gain levels feels fair and fun.
The combat mechanics, especially the magic spells, are fun and extraordinarily animated.
The building system is flexible and fun, if not a little frustrating at times.
Dragonwilds has its fair share of issues. It is out in early access right now, so that already means that the game is content-incomplete. Everything you would expect to be in the game is not in it yet.
There are bugs. The most annoying for me was an audio bug that caused the dragon roar to ignore all the audio settings. My ears have not recovered.
TL;DR What should you expect?
You can expect a co-op survival crafting game with a much higher level of polish than its competitors. The skills and combat are fun and satisfying, but the game is still missing content and has bugs, along with other gameplay changes that will happen over time.
The $30 price tag feels a little steep, but I absolutely can feel myself putting 50-100 hours into the game, plus more as it gets additional content.
